The main difference between indoor and outdoor plywood

Plywood is an important material in the construction and furniture manufacturing industries due to its flexibility, durability, and reasonable cost. However, not all types of plywood are the same. Depending on the purpose of use and environmental conditions, we can divide plywood into two main types: interior plywood and exterior plywood.

The difference between these two types of plywood lies not only in their properties but also in how they are produced, the type of adhesive used, and their practical applications. In this article, we will explore in detail the differences between interior and exterior plywood, from definitions and compositions to how to choose the right one for your needs.

1. Indoor plywood

Definition

Interior plywood is a type of plywood specifically designed for interior applications – devices and objects used within the home. The interior environment is understood as the environment within the confines of the house, with stable conditions in terms of temperature and humidity, and is almost unaffected by external weather factors. The interior furnishings include: beds, cabinets, tables and chairs, shelves, partitions,…

Structure

  • Some popular adhesive: Interior plywood uses Urea Formaldehyde glue (UF). This type of glue is not water-resistant but is suitable for indoor conditions, where humidity is low and there is no direct impact from the outdoor environment. The biggest advantage of UF glue is its low cost, which helps reduce production expenses. Additionally, for specific indoor locations such as kitchens, bathrooms, and steam rooms that often have high humidity and temperature or continuous changes, Melamine Formaldehyde (MF) glue is used. This type of glue is water-resistant, with a boiling water resistance time of up to 20 hours.
  • Cấu tạo: Interior plywood is often made from common types of wood such as eucalyptus, rubber, and acacia, with a smooth surface that is easy to process for painting, veneering, or laminating.

Applications

  • Furniture: Wardrobes, tables, chairs, book shelves, bed frames, etc.

  • Decoration: Wall or ceiling covers
  • Floor: Used as a base layer beneath the floor.

2. Outdoor plywood

Definition

Exterior plywood is a type of plywood manufactured to withstand harsh environmental conditions, such as high humidity, rain, and sunlight. This type of plywood can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. Exterior plywood is also known as marine plywood, maritime plywood, or by its international name, Marine Plywood, because this type of plywood is often used on ships.

Structure

  • Some popular adhesive: Use waterproof adhesives such as Melamine Formaldehyde (MF) or more commonly, Phenol Formaldehyde. (PF). These types of adhesives have superior water resistance, creating strong bonds between layers of wood and do not degrade when exposed to moisture or water…To understand the role of glue in industrial plywood, you can read more here (insert link to the article about glue).
  • Struture: Exterior plywood often uses hardwoods such as eucalyptus, acacia, or pine. The surface of exterior plywood does not need to be too smooth because it is usually used in load-bearing applications or as a outer layer.

Application

  • Outdoor: Wall panels, outdoor flooring, or coverings for construction projects.

  • High humidity area:: Bathroom, kitchen, or areas that frequently interact with water.

  • Outdoor furniture: Tables, chairs, other outdoor application

3. Notes when choosing plywood

  • The purpose If you need plywood for outdoor constructions or humid areas with continuously changing temperature conditions or other weather factors, choose exterior plywood. Conversely, indoor applications that do not come into contact with water can use interior plywood to save costs.
  • Brand: Plywood is widely produced, so there are currently many units selling this product. You need to carefully check the brand, label, and specifications of the board to ensure its intended use as well as warranty-related issues.
  • Surface treatment: Although if it is exterior plywood, you should still paint or apply an additional protective layer to increase its lifespan, especially when it comes into direct contact with water and sunlight.

4. Conclusion

Understanding the difference between interior plywood and exterior plywood is essential to ensure the product’s usability and durability. Interior plywood is suitable for indoor applications with high aesthetic requirements, while exterior plywood is ideal for structures exposed to external environmental factors.
